WHAT ARE COPYRIGHTS?
These are the rights legally granted over products created through a person’s intellectual effort of every kind. Registration is not required for copyright to arise. Rights over intellectual and artistic works arise upon the creation of the work. What is protected under copyright are intangible assets created by human thought. The rights to works covered by copyright belong entirely to their owners, and these rights cannot be used by third parties without permission.
The protection of copyrights is one of the fundamental human rights. According to Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary, or artistic work they have created.
WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?
It is a product of ideas belonging to a person or an institution. Copyrights, patents, utility models, designs, trademarks, geographical indications, new plant varieties, integrated circuit topographies, biotechnology, gene technology, computer programs, databases, and trade secrets are among the rights covered by intellectual property law.
At İstinye University Library, all information resources, especially printed and electronic books and journals, may only be used within the framework of copyright law, and only in this way can information services based on these resources be sustained. These rights are protected by relevant regulations and laws within national and international borders. All copyright regulations and laws limit the use of copyrighted publications by parties other than the copyright holders to certain extents.
All users of İstinye University Library (academics, students, external individuals, etc.) are obliged to act in accordance with the law, the principles set out in the university’s policy, and general academic ethics in all activities and procedures related to intellectual property and copyright.
Within the borders of Türkiye, copyrights are protected by Law No. 5846 on Intellectual and Artistic Works. This Law limits the use of copyrighted works by parties other than the copyright holders. Unauthorized copying or reproduction of copyrighted works means violating the legal rights of the copyright holder or related rights holders. All library users benefiting from library services are deemed to have accepted copyright laws.
İstinye University Library is responsible for complying with the provisions of the joint license agreements between ULAKBİM EKUAL, ANKOS (Anatolian University Libraries Consortium), and publishers. Electronic resources in databases are for individual use only. They may not be used for commercial and/or other purposes.
Users of the Electronic (Digital) Library are expected to respect the copyrights of publishers. In accordance with the joint license agreements between İstinye University Library, ANKOS (Anatolian University Libraries Consortium), and publishers, downloading an entire full-text journal in electronic format is prohibited. Failure to comply with this rule may result in the suspension of İstinye University Library’s access to the relevant subscribed database. Downloading full-text journals from databases is for individual use only. It may not be used for commercial and/or other purposes.
It is prohibited to systematically download all records of a journal or database by using robots or similar software from databases.
Selling a database, distributing its content, or using it for profit is a violation of copyright.
Sharing information copied from the database with persons other than İstinye University students, instructors, and staff is a violation of copyright.
Articles copied from databases may not be distributed through e-mail lists.
Making changes to information contained in databases or creating similar works by making use of them is a violation of copyright. It is not compatible with the principles of integrity in research.
